Bulldogs split on-the-road opening games

2015-09-20

The Farmers' Mutual Jr. Bulldogs started the season on a long road-trip, with stops at Cole Harbour and Liverpool, coming home with an opening night 8-5 loss against the Colts and a 4-2 win versus the Privateers.

On Saturday, the 'Dogs overcame a 2-0 first period deficit, scoring four unanswered goals in the second and third. Riley MacIsaac got things going in the second, with an assist to Will Kerr.

It was all Bulldogs in the third as James Briand, Dylan Grant and Devin MacLaughlin found the back of the net in the first ten minutes. Drawing assists were Grant, Brett MacNeil (2), and new additions Justin Webb and Keith Leadbeator. Sophomore goaltender Tanner Doiron, playing his first of the regular season, had 24 saves on 26 Liverpool scoring attempts.

In Cole Harbour, the 'Dogs had a rough start, falling behind 6-0 before roaring back with four straight off the sticks of Shawn Long (2), Keith Leadbeator and Scott Coulton. The Colts stretched the lead to three but the Bulldogs continued to battle, with Brett MacNeil scoring just before the 12-minute mark of the third. An empty-netter sealed the deal for Cole Harbour with less than a minute on the clock.

It was not the start that former Pirates' goaltender Marcus Otmar and his new teammates were aiming for but to their credit, the comeback showed that the Bulldogs were not going to roll over and play dead.

With the next game scheduled for October 10 at the Keating Centre, a 7:10 PM start versus the Colts, the 'Dogs have plenty of time to assess new players, try different line combinations and prepare for what should be an entertaining season of Junior hockey in Antigonish.
