A wild finish and big win for the Bulldogs
2011-11-27It may have been Grey Cup Sunday but the Bulldogs had only hockey on their minds in a 10-1 rout of the Brookfield Elks. Mitch Gammon led the way, having a great night with two goals and one assist.
Other Dogs with multiple points were Bobby Hamer and Steven MacGillivray (goal, two assists), Chris Alguire (two goals), Ryan Smith (goal and assist), Fraser White and Graeme Lodge (two assists). David McCarthy, Tim MacDougall and Colby VanOirschot also found the back of the net as the Jr. B's spread their goals over three periods, scoring three in the first, four in the second and three more in the third for their biggest single-game output of the season.
Goaltender Derrick Tait played a role, as well, with only one puck getting by him with just over five minutes left in the third. Beaten on the scoreboard, the Elks' Shawn Wright went a little too far on a charge to the net, running over Tait in what seemed to be display of poor sportsmanship. Having been shaken up by the hit, Tait left the ice. Doing battle on behalf of his netminder, John Wagstaff took on Wright, with both players ejected for fighting, Wagstaff taking an extra two for instigating.
Sending a message to the Elks that they would not turn a blind eye to the run at Tait, Gammon interfered with the Elks' goalie at 18:35. Unfortunately, this action quickly escalated into a line brawl, with the Elks' goalie becoming involved in a fight and Tait's replacement, Kyle Williamson, skating the length of the ice to join in. Once the melee was broken up, five Bulldogs and five Elks were ejected with either a one or two-game suspension. Thankfully, players on each bench remained where they were during the on-ice skirmish.
Should be lots of room on the Bulldogs' bench for next Friday's encounter with the Pictou Scotians, in what is the first of a home-and-home series between the first-place 'Dogs and last-place Scotians. Don't let the standings fool you, though, as the Scotians pushed the Jr. B's to the limit in their last encounter in Trenton.
